The power of growth mindset is wonderful, I am a 3rd grade bilingual teacher. A few weeks ago a student came to me during reading time and he asked me -Mr. Briceno I know I am not supposed to be reading and listening to the books in English in the chromebook (these are instructions from the bilingual coaches to the teachers in my school), but can I do it some time when I am reading ? It was 3 weeks ago, well, as a teacher I decided to do what was best to do for my students in this situation. I said-it is ok if you can read and listen during your reading time. I challenged my student using the power of “yet”, I told him- ok, use the headphones to read and listen but you need to select english books in your current reading level and you have to pick the genre, not me it is your time it is your choice ok, enjoy your reading time, but after you have read the books two times you are going to read those books without the audio, Do you understand? I said to him remember it is just practice, do not say I can not read without them. '' Instead of saying I do not or I can not you need to add the word “YET”, I do not know “yet”. The results a few days later was that my student one morning came to tell me that from now on he was ready to read English books without audio. He shared with me that felt confident to start reading by himself. When I read him saying that I knew that the power to influence and inspire others is in our hands, that was an accomplishment as a teacher.
