Connecting and

Communicating the Ideas

When we think about professional development most of us could say it is another large and extended training or being honest others could affirm that it is a waste of time. Let me start this paragraph highlighting the value that PL have for the education field. Professional learning is important because it has the potential to open opportunities for career advancement, such as promotions. It can assist you in honing existing skills and in learning new ones.

However, if we want to see positive results, we need, in this case, all teachers, principals, and administrators to work together to be successful.

Always show your best attitude to start a new school year, we are teachers, we help others to achieve their goals. "The most important thing that you will ever wear is your attitude."-Jeff Moore.

It is necessary to consider The Key Principles of Effective Professional Learning to have significant Professional Learning. Without a doubt, principals, teachers, administrators and coaches need to find The "Why"  that we want to change PL at our school.

"WHY"

Everyone needs to know that the secret to creating and leading changes is speaking from the heart. "We often ask questions about how students learn, but not often about how teachers learn " Gulamhussein (2013). I firmly believe that teachers have the ability to shape leaders of the future in the best way for society to build positive and inspired future generations.

As a teacher I want to promote significant changes that can help my students to reach their goals. One of those changes is to create significant learning environments not only in my classroom but also in my organization. In addition, it is necessary to implement a new way to develop and improve professional learning model to break the old models, I am not saying that current models are bad or nobody get nothing from them but I am talking if we can create a system where teacher, including myself, can achieve and get more knowledges to put in practice in the classrooms by learning on our terms.

Call of Action

There is no way to be successful implementing professional development if you do not provide teachers with quality professional development. This professional development is engaging, collaborative, and specific to teachers’ needs. Moreover, by practicing teacher-led collaboration, teachers can explore creativity through choice, ownership, voice, and authenticity (COVA models) allowing participants a first-hand experience in which they can relate to the students and grant them very significant opportunities.

'...over 90 percent of teachers report having participated in professional development in the past year, but the majority also report that it was not useful.'’

-Darling Hammond (2009)

During call of action I will explain to them the reason and purpose of this idea which is to create significant and effective professional learning models. According to Gulamhussein (2013), "most professional development today is ineffective. This goes hand by hand, when the teacher is not learning effectively they won't be able to implement those ideas into the classroom, which means students won't be integrating new ideas in their learning process.

Professional Learning Blueprint

I decided to create my Professional Learning into two phases. Phase 1 represents an important factor in this project, it is building background knowledge, and the reason is to inform and bring awareness about this new plan. Basically in this phase I will share the purpose, call of action and share blended learning information with participants, administrators, teachers, coaches and staff. Phase 2 is the flame in this process, it is when we put the plan into action. On this stage of the plan teachers will be able to create a blended learning environment in their classroom. Also, they are going to put in practice the COVA models and they will continue receiving ongoing support.

I am suggesting to the administrators to implement new strategies guided for disruptive innovation and being open to create a blended learning environment. Call of action presentations will be used to introduce the topic to the teachers. Moreover, I will be sharing the importance of applying a growth mindset that is essential for students and themselves. The google forms we designed are proper because teachers need support and feedback.

Audience

The growth of technology in the field of education continues to impact the way students learn and acquire new tools for learning. The Blended Learning Model facilitates a student’s ability to attain more information while at the same time motivating them to increase their academic performance. We often ask questions about how students learn, but not often about how teachers learn." Gulamhussein (2013).  I want to start making changes in my organization. It requires doing it step by step. I will be able to help and support my coworkers by giving them all the sources needed to make this new project successful. Teamwork is the key, always keeping in mind that our main goal is for students to help them be successful in life.

Fostering Collaboration

In this specific area teachers will receive all support needed from our district experts, coaches or blended learning leaders. Another important aspect is that our teachers will always be able to observe each other and share their feedback and additional recommendations, putting in practice values such as a growth mindset and COVA models. During the PLC and teacher conference time it is a great moment to encourage each other and collaborate in their future lessons. Teachers also can adjust their lesson according to students needs and abilities  to provide an authentic learning experience.

Fostering Self-Directed Learning

People learn how to develop their skills through a process, time and strategies, we are in the 21th century where everything is possible through technology, I strongly believe that we have in our hands the keys to help others to develop their abilities keeping the experiences that we have in order to design plans or strategies that can contribute to the learner to reach their goals.

As a teacher, I want to be the support for my students to build up a solid foundation in their academic growth and make connections to reach the next step in their learning journey. However, as a teacher I need to learn the skills of self-management, active learning and flexibility. During the PL meeting is the perfect memento to have the opportunity to develop the ability of self directed learning and self reflective learning process, where we can see and diagnose learning needs, establish our goals and identify those practical resources to learn.

I want to encourage others to set their goals by themselves, helping them in each stage of the process. The COVA approach is one of the resources that I want to share with teachers where they have choice, ownership, and voice in an authentic learning environment. Feedbacks are needed when we are implementing something new, I want to add another strategy to know how the project is doing. I will use self-assessment through Google Forms to know those areas where I need to improve and make some changes to be successful.

Professional Learning Instructors

Ms. Rodriguez and I will lead as the Blended Learning Leaders and will give help at all times to the teachers either through email, google form, by phone, or during PL meetings. We will be in communication with our  district curriculum support. Also, coaches will be assisting throughout the timeline in aligning curriculum and blended learning. Aligning Outcomes,  Assessments, and Activities. To organize my PL, I created a three column table that aligns the outcomes, assessments, and activities for my training session. My three- column table is focused on one Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG): Learners will experience a “go-and-show” model of professional learning, reflect on their experience, and develop an activity they can use in their own go-and-showprofessional training sessions.

5 Key Principles of Effective Professional Learning

Duration:

The initial duration of the Professional Learning will be over 13 days throughout the school year. Those days will be represented in 15-30 hours of research, coaching, learning new concepts, strategies, pedagogies, collaborating, planning, creating, and implementing Blended Learning Models to improve students' reading levels in elementary schools.

Support:

The professional learning plan will be an exciting and challenging journey. Also,I will be there as the Teacher lead for all participants, no matter if it is a professional day scheduled or a regular day all teachers will be able to call, email, or come down the hall at any time.We all have a principal assignment throughout the school day. One of the most important components of support is the coaching days which will occur once per month, and participants will also be part of a Canvas as a resource where everyone can support each other and collaborate.

Engagement:

Through this PL teachers will be able to create and share ideas related to the main goal of this PL which is to help students to develop their foundational skills specifically in their reading fluency and grade levels. Also, teachers will be applying their knowledge from those experiences to assist their students in reaching their learning goals. The PL sessions will be highly based on collaboration, and teachers will be encouraged to take risks and fail forward.

Modeling:

Sharing my ePortfolio and the instructional design plan (canvas) I will help and inspire participants in my school to believe that they have the power to take challenges and be open to say I can, I will do it, it is not going to be easy but I will try my best. Additionally, as teachers create their learning plans, they will be asked to share them with each other.  Teachers need to believe in and model the growth mindset. Be ready to make some mistakes or to get results that you are not expecting with your students but in this process is where you learn from those failures.

Specific Content:

In this professional learning course the content will be adapted to the participants' needs based on the grade level of their students. The specifics of this will be determined upon analyzing those teachers registered for the course. In each stage teachers always will have coaching sessions for more specific details, every teacher will have the opportunity to ask the facilitator what exactly they need to achieve or would like support during the coaching days.

In this stage the leader will share the call of action plan and discuss implementation of the individualized professional learning model for teachers

Teachers will be able to see the individualized professional learning call of action. Also, teachers will have the opportunity to add their Ful name, Phone number and email adress if they are interested in it.

The teacher's instructor will send an email or message to all participants letting them know the group (chat) guidelines and purpose. Also, the leader will make a question about " What was the reason you signed up for this professional learning course? to generate participation between participants.

Teachers will watch a short video to learn the benefits of implementing BL Models. Also, participants will be able to make questions during 5 min of open questions and answers.

Teacher lead and participants will go over their video questions and then they will decide on which digital resources best match with students' needs.

The instructor(teacher lead) will ask participants to share what they have learned this week and how blended learning models help to improve reading fluency.

Participants will learn that hearing and making rhymes, repetition, and reading books that are interesting to the students, make it more enjoyable in the learning process.

Teachers will model picking an online book to demonstrate that certain resources are available according to their reading levels. Also, during this time participants will be able to ask questions if needed.

The instructor(teacher lead) will ask participants to share what they have learned this week and how blended learning models help to improve reading fluency.

Teacher lead will give participants some essentials questions that need to be implemented during this learning activity: What is the first sound that you hear in the word Teeth?

How can learners Identify the first sounds presented orally?

Teacher will give participants explicit instruction, practice and digital resources on foundational reading skills such as recognizing and manipulating word parts presented orally (phonemic awareness), understanding letter-sound relationships (phonics), blending letter-sound patterns to produce words (decoding), or understanding common spelling patterns (encoding).

Teacher will model how to do a real-aloud activity

Based on they learned by observing the leader model, meeting and peer's collaboration, the participants in training will practice implementing the course based on learning component with their students as the leader observe

Presentation and Resources

Finally, I created a google slides that I will be using during my PL session  with our professional development team members. Also, I will use a PL final feedback form # 1 and Extended PL final feedback form #2 as an important component of effective learning.

Readings and Reflections

Here you will be able to see references that I have been using for the M.Ed in Applied Digital Learning program at Lamar University. There are a variety of texts, articles etc, that were required or recommended for the courses. Also, you will find other resources that helped me to work on my innovation plan or literature review.

In this course I learned how to evaluate the challenges with existing PL efforts and analyze and apply the key principles that make up effective professional learning. In addition, I was exploring and analyzing why examining our thinking and talking with others about the impact of the learning environments that we have created is one of the most important things we can do to improve our learner’s achievement. The five principles were implemented throughout the PL outline. This professional learning outline gives detailed information to generate a solid structure in creating a significant learning environment. Also, through this course teachers will not be simply ‘sitting and getting’; they have the opportunity to be active participants. putting in practice COVA approaches and collaborating with each other.
